Farmers Market Shopping Tips
For the best selection, shop early. Depending on crowd size, farmers can sell out quickly. Shopping just after the market opens will ensure a big selection of the best produce.
- Bring a cooler with ice: Meats and produce will stay fresher stored in a cooler for the ride home
- Let the season dictate what's for dinner: Before buying, check out what's available from all the vendors. Browsing first will inspire your menu.
- Know which produce is in season: To avoid surprises, learn which produce will be available before visiting the market. For a listing of seasonal produce, browse the "What's in Season Chart at OurOhio.org.
- Involve the whole family: Give kids a few dollars and let them make their own purchases. Incorporating fruits and vegetables into meals will be easier if kids have a hand in selecting wat to eat.
- Be adventurous: The market is full of flavors and colors. Try something new! Growers can help with cooking tips, serving ideas and recipes.
- Get to know your farmer: Unlike grocery stores, farmers markets offer unique opportunities to talk with the person who grew the food. Farmers can answer questions and make recommendations.
Questions to ask the producer
No one knows more about the product than the grower. The farmer is a great resource to learn how and where the food is grown, preparation tips and more. You may even get to sample the product before buying. Don't be afraid to ask these questions next time you visit the market: - What is this?
- How do I prepare it?
- What foods should I serve with this?
- Is there a specific variety best for baking, preserving, eating, etc?
- What's the best way to store my purchase?
- When was it picked?
- Tell me about your farm.
